DSP Staffing Crisis – DD Families


There are approximately 80,000 Direct Support Professional (DSPs) positions needed in Ohio. Agencies are reporting 25% to 30% vacancy rates in DSP positions. The result is that existing staff, supervisors and administrative personnel need to work excessive overtime, which contributes to burnout and exacerbates turnover. Ohio needs approximately 20,000 Direct Support Professionals to fill open positions.

Ohio’s developmental disability system is facing a major staffing crisis. The lack of Direct Support Professionals affects a vast spectrum of people. Here are some of their stories.
